Phonics Phase 2 s a t p i n Picture/word match cards

What’s included? x4 sheets (activities and answers) for Phase 2 Set 1 (letters - s a t p i n). Portrait orientation, pdf format. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This activity set has been designed to practise and reinforce the first six sounds in Phase 2 - s a t p i n. Learners sound out the words on the ‘word cards’ and match these to the images on the ‘picture cards’. Answers are clearly presented on pages 3 and 4 for quick easy reference - encouraging learners to be autonomous. All words in this resource only use the sounds ‘s a t p i n’. This ‘Phase 2’ phonics practise activity set (1) has been designed to be a simple, predictable matching activity to promote independence and consolidate knowledge of the first set of letters/sounds introduced. This activity is ideal for individuals/groups to be getting on with independently or for an adult to use to support learners needing some extra help/to revisit these sounds. Phase 2, set 2 (sounds m d g o c k) is also available (in same design) in my TES shop if you like this one. How to use it? The adult can pre-cut the x16 rectangular shaped picture cards (x8) and word cards (x8) (pages 1 and 2). Grey dotted lines guide where to cut. These x16 cards can then be shuffled and placed on a table top for learners to read and match. Resource Details… The words on the word cards only use the letters s, a, t, p, i, n. These words are: snap pin pants spin tin sit pan snip Learners may find ‘snip’, snap’, ’spin’ and ‘sit’ more tricky to match as these four cards do not link directly to a noun picture card. ‘Snap’ links to a ‘crocodile’, ‘snip’ to ‘scissors’, ’spin’ to a ‘globe’ and ‘sit’ to the cat which is ‘sitting’ on a chair - encouraging learners to think a bit more about the meaning of the words on the cards. This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This ‘Phase 2’ phonics practise activity set (2) has been designed to be a simple, predictable matching activity to promote independence and consolidate knowledge of the first set of letters/sounds introduced. This activity is ideal for individuals/groups to be getting on with independently or for an adult to use to support learners needing some extra help/to revisit these sounds. Phase 2, set 1 (sounds s a t p i n) is also available (in same design) in my TES shop if you like this one. How to use it? The adult can pre-cut the x16 rectangular shaped picture cards (x8) and word cards (x8) (pages 1 and 2). Grey dotted lines guide where to cut. Resource Details… The words on the word cards only use the letters s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k (from sets 1 AND 2) These words are: dog map pig cap pot mat pod cogs Learners may find ‘pod’, ‘cogs’ and ‘mat’ more tricky to match as these three words are not as obvious/may be ‘new’ concepts to learners, encouraging learners to think a bit more about the meaning of the words on the cards. E.g. some learners may not know that a ‘pea’ grows inside of a ‘pod’. Learners may not know/be familiar with ‘cogs’ (or know they are called) and learners may confuse ‘cat’ with ‘mat’. I have included an orange arrow pointing to the ‘mat’ to help make this clearer. What’s included? This download includes x2 resources which have been designed to use separately AND together. In total there are x20 pdf sheets, portrait orientation in colour. One resource is matching grapheme/picture word puzzles - x10 images for the sounds s/a/t/p and x5 images for letters ‘i’ and ’n’. The second resource involves sounding out these words and writing them - using sounds only in Phases 2 and 3 - perfect to practise and reinforce Phase 2/3 sound knowledge. This (second) resource is differentiated with a more and less supported version depending on your learners’ needs, the difficulty level is identified as an icon at the base of each sheet (right side). Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This resource set has been designed to practise matching graphemes with images beginning with each sound AND to sound out words (using letters/sounds within Phases 2 and 3) to write them. Resource 1 Details Grapheme/picture match puzzles The tick in each image box (top right) indicates that this image is a word which can be sounded out. How to use it? An adult prints out ‘Grapheme/picture match puzzles’ sheet onto card and cuts along the dotted lines, including to separate ‘letters/graphemes’ from ‘images’. The set of cut up letters and images can be placed on a table top for learners to match as a ‘two part’ mini jigsaw puzzle. Each letter only fits the corresponding image. s socks/skull/starfish/stamp (on a letter)/snail/slug/sun/sting (from a wasp/bee)/skeleton/swim a abacus/ash/Africa/alarm clock/album/amber/alpaca/advent (calendar)/ant/asparagus t tick/tent/tractor/trees/tooth/truck/toaster/tools/torch/trainers p panda/planets/park/pumpkin/pelican/presents/printer/popcorn/pink/plant i ink/igloo/insects/infant (not ‘baby’)/ingots (gold) n numbers/north/napkin/nest/night Resource 2 Details Writing words resource Pages 1-2. Learners are to sound out and write the words for the images featured on the sheet, one image per box. These sheets are differentiated - page 1 is easier to complete (than page 2) as lines (to write on) show how many sounds are in each word. Red lines/letters to write on indicate a ‘tricky’ sound which may be difficult to hear clearly when the word is spoken, e.g. ‘planets’ is often said as ‘planits’ with an ‘i’ sound. Learners may need help with these (red) letters/sounds. Page 3 clearly shows the answers. Resource layout The font used on page 1 is ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ - size 120. The font is the same type on page 4 - size 40. Important message… ANY issues with any of this resource please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes. What’s included? x2 sheets to practise writing words using Phase 2 phonics knowledge. Both sheets are portrait orientation, pdf format. Who’s it for? These ‘Phase 2’ phonics ‘writing words’ sheets have been designed for Early Years children who are learning these sounds for the first time, pupils in Year 1 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds or ideal for assessment purposes at the end of Phase 2. This resource is also ideal for pupils with additional learning needs. How to use it There are two levels of worksheet to complete, both include an icon at the lower right side indicating this level. Both sheets include colours which link to the order that the sounds are taught. From top downwards - red sounds are introduced first (so should be most familiar), orange sounds are next, followed by yellow then green sounds which are the last of the Phase 2 phonics sounds. The less challenging sheet focuses on CVC words and includes ‘sound dots’ under the lines (to write on) indicating how many sounds are in each word. This sheet also has one CCVC and one CVCVC word at the end (green). This sheet displays the icon with the green figure (lower right side). The more challenging sheet focuses on words with generally more sounds or using those sounds which can be trickier to remember. This sheet displays the icon with the red figure (lower right side). There is a simple instruction at the top (for learners) and a clear space at the base of each sheet for learners to write their name and a space for the number date (top, right). CVC 'ug' Words Activity (Phase 2/3 Words)

(0)
What’s included? This download includes x3 A4, portrait pdf sheet to practise reading and writing CVC words mostly within Phase 2. Two sounds in this set - (j and sh) are in Phase 3. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This activity is interactive and encourages learners to sound out and read simple CVC words and think about what these words mean. Some words of course may have more than one meaning, however for the purpose of this activity I have only provided one illustration for every word. For words which are ‘new’ to them learners may need to work by process of elimination to identify the correct word/picture combination to record this (in writing) on the sheet provided. Resource Details The layout includes one ‘CVC wheel’ to make with easy to follow instructions. Once the wheel is assembled once turned different initial letters are revealed to make x9 ‘_ug’ CVC words. ALL words are ‘real’ (not ‘nonsense’) words. Words/pictures included are: bug dug hug jug (j is a phase 3 sound) mug rug slug shrug (sh is a phase 3 sound) tug Differentiation Also included is one sheet in two levels of difficulty. The first sheet only has the initial sound missing (easier), the second sheet has ALL letters missing - for learners to write on the lines provided (more challenging). The level of difficulty is indicated by an icon at the base of each sheet (right side) - green for easier, red for more challenging. There is a clear space for learners to write their name at the base of each sheet (left side). The CVC phonics wheel can be reused time and again. Suggestion I suggest printing and making the phonics wheel out of card which is stronger so more robust than paper and easier to turn. Alphabet letters for window display

Alphabet letters for window display

(0)
What’s included? This pdf download includes x5 landscape orientation sheets featuring every alphabet letter and clear step by step instructions to create colourful acetate/cellophane letters for (window) display. What’s it for? These letters have been designed to install and sense of awe and wonder - the letters look so beautiful when the sun shines through them and where the coloured letter shape ‘falls’ depends on the position of the letters in relation to the sun which changes as the sun’s position changes throughout the day. The set gives an opportunity to showcase the whole alphabet together to encourage learners to recognise and name each letter (and sound) and practise ordering the letters of the alphabet (depending on how they are displayed). The letters can of course be repositioned to create words and labels as you choose. I have included ‘labels’ for the words ‘Hello’ and ‘Welcome’ as a separate listing in my TES shop - these could be good for displaying on a glass panel on a classroom door where you meet and greet parent/carers. This resource supports work on shadows, light/dark and better understanding the shape of lowercase letters to develop greater recognition. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students who would appreciate a pop of colour shining through letters/words when the sun comes out! Resource Details The letters are all in the font ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ - size 220-250, so a clear, ‘easy to read’ size. There are x5 pages. The first includes clear, simple step-by-step instructions and the remaining pages includes all of the alphabet letters (not in order). Suggestions I recommend printing and making these letters out of white card - paper would be too flimsy and see-through so not effective. A set of coloured acetate/cellophane sheets is needed to make these - these are quite inexpensive on Amazon(!) I recommend also backing every letter in white card so that the coloured acetate/cellophane is concealed within the card - this looks so much nicer on the window and makes each letter stronger however is twice the work and time (and card!) to create. If made well the first time these could last years and create a very beautiful addition, offering inspiration in any learning space. Important message… ANY issues with any of this please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes AND I am happy to create a different version if you have an idea just let me know - I’d love to hear from you! Feedback of this resource would be wonderful! Thank you!
Phase 2 Phonics CVC word wheel Read/Write real/nonsense words

Phase 2 Phonics CVC word wheel Read/Write real/nonsense words

(0)
What’s included? This download includes three A4, portrait pdf sheet to practise reading and writing CVC words all made using letters within Phase 2. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details The layout includes x2 wheels, one for the ‘front’ (wheel 1) and one for the back - with the x2 sets of vowels on (wheel 2). Once assembled (according to instructions included on the pdf) the ‘CVC Phonics Wheel’ can be turned to reveal one vowel in the centre of the two consonants displayed/written on the front of the wheel. The wheel can be turned clockwise or anticlockwise, the direction doesn’t matter. Some words will be ‘real’ e.g. den//hen/men/pen and some words will not be real (will be ‘nonsense’) words e.g. len/ren. Real/nonsense words made can be written on page 3. There is space for x10 real and x10 nonsense words to be written here and a clear space for learners to write their name (at the base of the sheet). Suggestion For older, more able learners this activity could be linked to looking up new words in the dictionary to find out if they are/are not real words and if they are ‘real’ words e.g. ‘fen’ find out what their meanings are (Fen is used to refer to an area of low, flat, wet land, especially in the east of England) - so now you know! Important message… ANY issues with any of this CVC phonics wheel please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes as needed. Feedback of this resource would be wonderful! Thank you!

This game can be for one learner to play alone or for several learners to play together in a group (taking turns). If a player rolls the same combination as previously rolled they can have another turn. First player to roll (read and write!) x5 real OR nonsense words wins!
